Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North

Much of our programming makes use of the PBS documentary Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North, produced and directed by our founder, Katrina Browne. Programming possibilities include screenings of the entire film or a shortened version of it; selected clips from the film to illustrate program content or spark lively dialogue; or participation by one or more of the individuals featured in the film.

Discussing the Trade

The following video shows Katrina Browne, the founder of the Tracing Center, discussing the history and legacy of slavery during a dialogue in Bermuda in April 2010, following a screening of Traces of the Trade.

This dialogue was one of a series organized by Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda (CURB). The video ,”Discussing the Trade,” was created by local filmmaker Alex Dill and aired later on local television.

In this clip, CBS anchor Harry Smith of the Early Show interviews founder Katrina Browne, along with Tom DeWolf and Juanita Brown, about the film, Tom’s book, and the mission of the Tracing Center.

Katrina Browne and Juanita Brown speak at the UCLA School of Public Affairs

This video was filmed at a screening and discussion of Traces of the Trade for about 170 students, faculty, and community members at the UCLA School of Public Affairs in 2010. The event was hosted by the school’s dean, Franklin D. Gilliam, and offered with generous support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

The panel was moderated by Judy Woodruff of NewsHour and Harvard Law School professor Charles Ogletree, and featured Dr. J. Bryan Hehir of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Ambassador James Joseph, Prof. Goodwin Liu of the UC Berkeley Law School, and Ruth A. Wooden, President of Public Agenda.
