The Tracing Center on Histories and Legacies of Slavery was founded in 2009 to carry out the racial-justice mission arising out of our Emmy-nominated PBS documentary, Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North. The film follows ten descendants of New England slave traders in exploring the under-appreciated role of the North, and the entire nation, in slavery and racial discrimination. Our mission is to create greater awareness of historic complicity in slavery and the transatlantic slave trade and to inspire acknowledgement, dialogue and active response to this history and its many legacies. We do this for the purpose of racial and economic justice, healing, and reconciliation.
